The Big Sick is a heartwarming and thoroughly entertaining film. While it may not leave you with a extraordinarily visible emotional reaction, there is no doubt it will melt away your internal cynicism until you are – pardon the cliche – all ‘gooey inside’. In fact when it comes to a genre that is ridden with stereotypes and predictability, curing and pardoning the cliche is where The Big Sick triumphs.

As a fan of the original Archie Comics I was surprised to find that the teacher, Ms Grundy was portrayed not as the older, proficient teacher of Riverdale High, instead she was used to market a new subplot of forbidden love between her and Archie.
The scene appears like this: Archie is chopping wood, of all things. Unbeknownst to him, the Slurpee-sipping, Julliard bound teacher is in her car watching him. With a glimpse of his abs the decision is made to invite him inside her car because “it’s far too hot” for him to be working so hard.
