On Wednesday Radio Monash were thrilled to to attend the 2016 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards in Sydney. Covering the event live from the Red Carpet, our presenters were face to face with some of the most iconic and celebrated personalities of the Australian Film and TV Industry. Radio Monash is the first community owned and student-run media organisation to be invited to the event in the history of awards, which is an achievement we are both incredibly humbled and excited by. One of Australia’s most loved and recognised faces and voices of Australian Television and Radio Julia Zemiro spoke to Radio Monash this year at the 2016 AACTA Awards. She has been gracing our big screen, small screen and radio for over 20 years with globally recognised events such as presenting the Eurovision Song Contest for SBS and appearances on Top Gear, Thank God You’re Here, Talkin’ Bout Your Generation, QI as well as a long list of Acting and Theatre credits.


The larger than life Celebrity Chef Manu Feidel graced the AACTA red carpet and Radio Monash microphone to talk about the past and future success of hit show “My Kitchen Rules”, a previous nominee of AACTA’s Best Reality Television Series in both 2013 and 2014. Manu spilled the beans on what it takes to create a nationally adored show as well as providing some helpful tips on a delicious student budget meal.


Despite being runner up in the premier season of MasterChef Australia in 2009, Poh Ling Yeow has became a household name and nationally recognised Television Chef and Personality with ABC’s “Poh’s Kitchen”, SBS program “ Poh & Co” as well as various artistic and acting appearances on both TV and Film. Poh took to the AACTA red carpet to discuss success in Television as well as cooking on a student budget with Radio Monash.


Radio Monash had the pleasure to talk to Television and Film Actor Caroline Brazier at the 2016 AACTA Awards. From staring as ‘Betti’ in ABC’s cult classic Parallax through to Chrissey Merchant in the acclaimed ‘Packed to the Rafter’s to AACTA nominated ‘Rake’ , Caroline Brazier has forged a formidable body of successful Australia Television credits. Brazier discussed the unique success of Rake as well as it’s importance to Australian Culture and way of life.


With an un paralleled and revered history in the Australian Entertainment Industry, Kerri Anne Kennerly spoke with Radio Monash about the future of the Australian Entertainment and Media Landscape as well as the importance of the AACTA Awards in the fostering of growth and success in Australian Film and Television. Kerri Anne appeared on Television Screens around Australia in 1967, and to this day continues to be Australia’s most well recognised and adored Light Entertainment hosts.


Radio Monash had the opportunity to speak with the nationally proclaimed ‘dad’ of Australian Television Eric Thompson during the 2016 AACTA Awards. Thompson, a previous nominee and recipient of an AACTA, AFI award and Silver Logie touched on his 25 years in the business with the success of shows such as Packed to the Rafters, All Saints and award winning 800 words as well as the future of young talent in the Australian Film and Television Industry.


Radio Monash Journalists are continuing to pinch ourselves after discussing Australian Film and Television with icon Michael Caton, immortalised as beloved characters such as Darryl Kerrigan from ‘The Castle’, Uncle Harry in the television series ‘The Sullivans’ and AACTA Nominated program ‘Packed to the Rafters’ character ‘Ted Taylor’. His recent work ‘Last Cab to Darwin’ received multiple awards including Best actor in the 2015 AACTA Awards.


The young and energetic Odessa Young talked to Radio Monash about her AACTA award-winning role in ‘The Daughter’ where she played the pained and emotive Hedvig. Having performed few on-screen roles, featuring in ‘Looking For Grace’ and ‘Blood Pulls A Gun’, Odessa was optimistic but also nervous about her nomination for Best Actress In A Lead Role, an award she’d go on to win at the end of the night.

From humble beginnings on Student Television program ‘Studio A’, Comedian and Actor Luke McGregor spoke to Radio Monash about his AACTA nominated, six part comedy documentary “Luke Warm Sex” including the possibility of another season of the acclaimed ABC show. Luke McGregor has toured internationally with the wildly successful comedy special “My Soulmate is Out of My League” and being featured at both Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well as continuous appearances on AACTA award winning ‘Utopia’ and ‘Rosehaven’. Award winning actor Celia Pacquola joined Luke on the red carpet to discuss her 2016 AACTA winning performance in ‘The Beautiful Lie’ including previous nominations for appearances in ABC’s ‘Utopia’ and ‘Rosehaven’. Celia has built a strong background in Radio, Television and Live Performance with Fox Summer Breakfast on Fox FM and BBC Radio 4 programs alike. Her work in Television includes impressive performances as ‘EJ’ in ‘Laid’ and various appearances on national hit shows such as Rove, The Project, Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation and Have You Been Paying Attention?.


Comedian, ex-Generation Y captain and creator of AACTA, Australian Director’s Guild, Australian Screen Editor’s and Screen Producers Australia award winning show ‘Please Like Me’, Josh Thomas, stopped to talk to us about his stressful new TV show and what he missed most about ‘Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation’. The emotional, hilarious and dramatic fourth season of ‘Please Like Me’ was nominated for ‘Best Television Comedy Series’ and sadly lost to ‘Upper Middle Bogan’s’ third series.


Helpmann nominated Stand Up Comedian and Host of ABC’s ‘Hard Quiz’, Tom Gleeson spoke to Radio Monash about student HECS debt, jumping fences and fashion attire at the AACTA Awards with Radio Monash. Tom Gleeson has supported Louis CK on national comedy tours as well as entertained Australian troops on active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan and regularly features at major Australian and International Comedy Galas including the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. His Stand Up Specials TOM ON! And UP HIMSELF have also received critical acclaim.


Statisticians at Radio Monash have confirmed that 91.85% of Australian homes have at least one recipe from food magazine editor, author and chef Donna Hay in their homes. We had the opportunity to ask Donna to feed us on the red carpet as well as asking for ideas to feed our hunger on a student budget. Donna Hay has made multiple appearances on National Television as a guest judge on MasterChef Australia and currently hosts Television series ‘Donna Hay – Basics to Brilliance’ on the Lifestyle Food Foxtel.

Journalist and contestant on Season Two of ‘The Bachelorette’ Georgia Love was missing her right hand man Lee Elliott at the 2016 AACTA Awards, however gleefully discussed her time during the Bachelorette with Radio Monash. Georgia Love is a 27 year old Journalist who began pursuing Journalism since the age of 15 and of recently has worked with WIN Tasmania on the nightly news program alongside Brent Costelloe.

AACTA Nominated and ASTRA Award winning actor Lincoln Younes spoke about his work with Nominated Film “Down Under” with Radio Monash after the black comedy film was nominated for both Best Original Screenplay and Younes’ portrayal of ‘Damon’ for Best Supporting Actor. Following national success of Television show ‘Tangle’ , Lincoln gave some insight into the making and promotion of ‘Down Under’ and proved crafty when discussing Home and Away doomsday scenarios, of which Younes got his start in Film and Television.

As high heels and leather shoes walked across the red carpet, four paws also followed close behind them. The star of the upcoming ‘Red Dog’ sequel: ‘Red Dog: True Blue’ barked and smiled for the cameras. The original film’s star Koko had sadly passed away a few years earlier, but Red Dog’s new Kelpie: Phoenix, walked across the carpet like any other star.
