Supernatural is an American fantasy horror show produced by Eric Kripke. Starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles as the main characters, the show first premiered on September 13, 2005, on The WB, and subsequently became part of successor The CW’s (The US and Canada TV Network) television lineup.
The first season consists of 22 episodes that premiered on September 13, 2005, and concluded on May 4, 2006. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television, in association with Wonderland Sound and Vision. Along with Kripke, executive producers have been McG, Robert Singer, Phil Sgriccia, Sera Gamble, Jeremy Carver, John Shiban, Ben Edlund and Adam Glass. The series is originally filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia and surrounding areas and was in development for nearly ten years, as creator Kripke spent several years unsuccessfully pitching it. The pilot was viewed by an estimated 5.69 million viewers, and the ratings of the first four episodes prompted The WB to pick up the series for a full season.
Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) lost their mother at a very young age when she burned on the ceiling in Lawrence, Kansas. Following this, their dad, John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), goes on a quest to find the creature that killed her and take out his vengeance on the creature by destroying it. Dean comes looking for Sam who had left the family to live a normal life to study law at Stanford University after their dad goes missing on a “hunting trip”. Hearing this, Sam goes with Dean to look for John leaving his girlfriend, Jess (Adrianne Palicki), behind but had the intention of returning on Monday. The two brothers live a life on the road, in Dean’s black, 1967 Chevrolet Impala aka “Baby” with Kansas license plates. However, their father is not a typical hunter: he hunts supernatural creatures like ghosts, vampires, and spirits, and has trained his sons to do the same. The brothers follow the trail to Jericho, California where he was working on a case of the “Woman in White” who was hitchhiking and killing men who were unfaithful to their significant others. They investigate the case but Dean is soon arrested for impersonating a federal agent. However, he manages to escape custody, and saves his brother from the vengeful spirit. The “Woman in White” is finally put to rest after the brothers force her to confront the spirits of her children who she killed after she found out that her husband was being unfaithful to her and later killed herself. Sam later returns to his apartment in Stanford to discover his girlfriend Jessica pinned to the ceiling. He is then forced to watch as she is killed in the same supernatural manner as his mother. Jessica’s death prompts him to return to the life of hunting with Dean.
The series unfolds as the viewers discover that the brothers are more than what they seem to be. Dean who portrays himself as a playboy is different and is just fighting his abandonment issues and thinks of himself as a grunt. Sam who plays the ‘geeky’ brother questions Dean’s “shoot first, ask questions later” policy in turn helping him become a better and kinder person. They continue “saving people, hunting things…the family business”.
The show is much loved not only because of the storyline but also because the actors themselves are great people who care deeply about their fans. Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins have made an online crisis hotline called “You Are Not Alone” and Jared Padalecki has his campaign called “Always Keep Fighting,” both of which are aimed help people with mental health problems.
Supernatural became the longest-running North American fantasy series with its eleventh season. The series has been renewed for a twelfth season, which will premiere on October 13, 2016.
